This allows the ligaments around the knee to be balanced accurately and prevents alteration in patella height, which can have a deleterious effect on patellofemoral mechanics. Because of preoperative deformity, some ligaments around the knee are contracted. These are carefully released in a step-wise fashion to balance the soft tissues around the knee and allow optimum knee kinematics.
