brain tumor treatment expert neurologists India video

Brain tumor treatment in India is done by the expert neurologists of the country that is attracting a large number of foreign patients. Every year thousands of visitors around the world come to India for medical checkup and surgeries. The availability of clinical expertise and internationally trained and educated medical professionals in Indian hospitals for brain tumor treatment is a major factor in the growth of foreign patients visit to India.

A brain tumor is an abnormal growth of cells within the brain, which can be cancerous or non-cancerous. It is defined as any intracranial tumor created by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division, normally either in the brain itself in the cranial nerves.

Symptoms of brain tumor-

  • Seizures or convulsions.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Weakness or loss of feeling in the arms or legs.
  • Stumbling or lack of coordination in walking.
  • Abnormal eye movements or changes in vision.
  • Headaches that tends to be worse in the morning and ease during the day

Types of brain tumor – There are two types of brain tumor namely primary and secondary brain tumor.

  • Primary brain tumor - This is the most common type of brain tumor and is also known as gliomas. The primary brain tumor begins in glial cells. There are many types of gliomas.

Types of primary gliomas are -

  • Astrocytoma
  • Brain stem glioma
  • Ependymoma
  • Oligodendroglioma
  • Medulloblastoma
  • Meningioma
  • Schwannoma
  • Craniopharyngioma
  • Pineal region tumor
  • Secondary brain tumor - When cancer spreads from its original place to another part of the body, the new tumor has the same kind of abnormal cells. Cancer that spreads to the brain from another part of the body is different from a primary brain tumor. When cancer cells spread to the brain from another organ such as the lung or breast, doctors may call the tumor in the brain a secondary tumor or metastatic tumor. Secondary tumors in the brain are far more common than primary brain tumors.

Types of brain tumor treatment – There are various types of treatments to cure brain tumor -

  • Surgery - Surgery is the usual treatment for most brain tumors. To remove a brain tumor the neurosurgeon makes an opening in the skull which is known as craniotomy. In the surgery, the surgeon attempts to remove the entire tumor. If the tumor cannot be completely removed without damaging vital brain tissue, the surgeon may remove as much of the tumor as possible.

Partial removal helps to relieve symptoms by reducing pressure on the brain and reduces the amount of tumor. A part of the remaining tumor which cannot be removed is given for biopsy. In the biopsy procedure a small piece of the tumor is removed so that a pathologist can examine it under a microscope to determine the type of cells it contains.

Sometimes, a biopsy might be done with the help of a needle. In biopsy, the surgeons use a special head frame and CT scans or MRI to pinpoint the exact location of the tumor. The surgeon then makes a small hole in the skull and then guides a needle to the tumor. Using this technique to do a biopsy or for treatment is called stereotaxis. The surgery procedure might also include brain mapping to find functional pathways near tumors,

  • Radiation therapy – The radiation therapy makes use of high-powered rays to damage cancer cells and stop them from growing. This therapy is often used to destroy tumor tissue that cannot be removed with surgery or to kill cancer cells that may remain after surgery. Radiation therapy might also be used when surgery is not possible.

There are two types of radiation therapy –

  • External radiation – In external radiation the surgeon makes use radioactive material that is placed directly in the tumor, or implant radiation therapy. Depending on the material used; the implant may be left in the brain for a short time or permanently. Generally, external radiation treatments may be directed just to the brain tumor or to the surrounding tissue or the entire brain.

Sometimes the radiation is also directed to the spinal cord. When the whole brain is treated, the patient often receives an extra dose of radiation to the area of the tumor. This boost can come from external radiation or from an implant.

  • Stereotactic radio surgery – This is another type of radiation therapy to treat brain tumors. The stereotactic radio surgery is a radiation therapy technique that delivers a single, finely focused, high dose of radiation precisely to its target.

In this procedure high-energy rays are aimed at the tumor from many angles. In this way, a high dose of radiation reaches the tumor without damaging other brain tissue.

  • Chemotherapy - Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancerous brain tumor cells. The doctor may use just one drug or a combination, usually giving the drugs orally or by injection into a blood vessel or muscle. Intrathecal chemotherapy involves injecting the drugs into the cerebrospinal fluid.

Chemotherapy is usually given in cycles. A treatment period is followed by a recovery period, then another treatment period and so on. Depending on the drugs used, the way they are given and the patient's general health, a short hospital stay may be necessary. Advances in chemotherapy include direct placement into the tumor cavity using a new technique called convection enhanced delivery.

Recovery post surgery -

After brain tumor treatment, the patient will be shifted to the recovery room. The patient may have a headache. Medication for the headache will be provided as needed. The patient will be monitored and a check will be made on his blood pressure and pulse. The patient may resume normal activities and eat and drink as he feels better. Advantages of brain tumor treatment -

  • The lesion being treated receives a high dose of radiation with minimum risk to nearby tissue and structures.
  • Patients experience little discomfort.
  • The absence of an large incisions eliminates the risk of hemorrhage and infection.
  • Patients can immediately resume their previous activities after the surgery.

Medical tourists coming to India for Brain tumor treatment can greatly benefit by the quick medical appointments for the treatment and comfortable medical rehabilitation post the surgery. Brain tumor treatment in India is available at Delhi and Mumbai hospitals. These hospitals have the best neurosurgeons and the support staff for the treatment.
